I was always interested in painting and sculpting as a child. I took several art classes as a teenager including Breyer's Airbrushing Basics course(s) in the mid 2000's. I began practicing with an airbrush on body quality models around 2005, although I had been painting Breyers by hand as early as 2001.
Over the years I would paint for my own pleasure and occasionally show a model in the Breyer Youth Show. A few years ago I became interested in the realistic quality of professional artist resin models and purchased a few blank pieces including a handful of micro mini pewter horses. My work had previously been in traditional sized models but I found working with the smaller scale to be more enjoyable.
My collection moved from Original Finish models to custom artist resin pieces and after deciding I no longer wanted to show in model horse shows, I decided to open Black Sea Studios so others could enjoy my work as well.
Although I do not do drastic customs I really enjoy adding some additional sculpted work on a few select pieces. I've been doing this since around 2006 when I was one of the winners of Breyer's Design a Carousel contest at BreyerFest. I have created several stablemate models with sculpted tack (although none have been listed for sale) over the years. I have started working on a collection of custom Breyer Cougar models with the first being a white tiger (view able on the homepage). My own "big cat series" will include some additional sculpted on details, such as added belly and face hair on the tigers. A black maned lion is currently in progress.
I will occasionally post in-progress photos on my Facebook page as well as share photos of recently completed work before being posted for sale on Etsy. I am not a full-time artist, I only work on models when I have spare time.
Thank you for visiting!
